With cinemas around the world closed for months, all eyes are on July when two major studio releases hit the market: Disney’s Mulan (bumped from his original March release) and director Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated science fiction thriller, principle. It looks like Warner Bros., despite all the pandemic uncertainty, is boldly sticking to the planned release date of the latter film on July 17th. The studio has just released a new trailer that did its thing debut in an unusual medium: play every hour on the hour in the popular Battle Royale game Fourteen days.
We know very little about the film, not even the usual carefully crafted official premise, although the film’s title is a palindrome, which means that it reads the same thing back and forth – a subtle clue. Nolan has kept all additional details (including character names) top secret. John David Washington (Ballers, BlacKkKlansman) and Robert Pattinson (dusk Franchise, The lighthouse). The film also shows Kenneth Branagh (Murder on the Orient Express), Michael Caine (Inception, Interstellar), Clémence Poésy (Fleur Delacour in the Harry Potter Movies), Himesh Patel (Yesterday), Elizabeth Debicki (The man from U.N.C.L.E.), Martin Donovan (Ant man), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Super) and Indian film stars Dimples Kapadia and Denzil Smith.
The first trailer fell last December. As I wrote then: “Fresh from his Oscar-nominated World War II drama, Dunkirk, Nolan seems to be returning to his high-profile science fiction roots principle“This caravan opened with a setting of two men rappelling down a building, apparently against the laws of physics.” We all think we would run into the burning building, “a spokesman tells us.” But until we feel the heat we can never know. ”
So far we know the following. A man (Washington) goes through an apparently arduous process to join an elite international spy team, and ends up choosing: to give up his colleagues or to die. He chooses death and wakes up in a hospital to find out that he passed the test. The new job of the man: Prevent World War III and save the world – not from the nuclear holocaust, but from “something worse”. He gave a code word, “teaching”, to open the necessary doors.
If you were hoping for a little more information, count those disappointed hopes. This latest trailer offers a lot of action and excitement as well as a lot of new footage – including a lot more Pattinson – but not a lot of revealing details. “He can communicate with the future,” we hear a man say who is probably related to Washington’s character. But it’s not exactly time travel – more like “inversion”.
We learn a bit more about the strange artifact that can be seen briefly in the first trailer. When Washington shoots at it, the bullets are absorbed. “You don’t shoot the bullet – you catch it,” says Poésys scientist. We are told that there are people in the future who need “teaching” and it looks like they can be saved “in the here and now” by reversing the flow of time. But that will surely have some stunning consequences. All in all, it looks very much like Christopher Nolan, and we hope that enough theater will be reopened in time for publication.
principle is scheduled for release on July 17, 2020 – Coronavirus wants.
