Due to limited iPad availability in the first quarter, Huawei overtook Apple in China

Due to the limited iPad availability in China, Apple was overtaken by Huawei as the best-selling tablet brand in the first quarter of the year.

Almost all tablet manufacturers saw their sales while the corona virus was blocked due to a combination of delivery bottlenecks due to factory closings and reduced buying opportunities when the shops closed …

While total tablet deliveries decreased 30% in the first quarter, South China tomorrow post reports that Huawei has actually managed to increase its sales.

Huawei, headquartered in Shenzhen, recorded a 4.3 percent year-over-year increase in tablet shipments to 1.5 million units in the quarter ended March 31 – the only major tablet manufacturer on the market that posted positive growth in the period under review IDC said in the report on Monday.

During the quarter, Huawei replaced Apple as the top tablet brand with a market share of 40.2 percent, compared to 35.1 percent for the U.S. company, which lost its lead.

All other tablet brands were affected, but Apple had particularly limited iPad availability as its stores in China were closed early to limit the spread of the virus.

The IDC report showed that Xiaomi, Microsoft, and Lenovo saw sales decline in the first quarter, accounting for 5.5 percent, 3.2 percent, and 1.7 percent of the Chinese tablet market, respectively.

‘Only Huawei’s tablet business benefited from the increase in online education as other manufacturers missed the opportunity due to lack of plant capacity,’ when most factories closed due to a nationwide ban, the IDC report said.

According to IDC, there are mixed prospects for future tablet sales.

‘There will be less demand for tablets as people go back to school and their offices as the virus spreads.’

However, IDC expects teleworking and online education to become more accepted in the future, which will give tablet manufacturers a boost compared to their growth prospects before the pandemic.

‘Online education will be the key growth driver for the tablet market in the future,’ said IDC.

Smartphone sales in China recovered after the first quarter, although Apple may face tough times in the country if the government follows the threat of declaring Apple an ‘unreliable entity.’ This could create legal and administrative barriers to warn the public not to buy from Apple.
